Errors and troubleshooting

Here we will list some common errors that any user can receive while trying to upload the theme.

Error: “The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet”

A common issue that can occur with users new to installing WordPress themes is a “Broken theme or style.css missing” error message being displayed when trying to upload or activate the theme. This error message does not mean that the theme you have purchased is broken, it simply means it has been uploaded incorrectly. Luckily, there is a very easy fix.

If you’re seeing this confusing WordPress error when trying to upload the theme, it means the process breaks at some point and that’s most probably due to a few server settings limiting resources for your site. For example, the maximum upload size could be set to 4MB and the theme’s package is larger than that. This isn’t a bug but a matter of server settings.

There are two ways to solve the issue:

  1. Reach out to your hosting company and ask them to increase the upload size limit and the PHP memory allocated for your site. Recommended PHP configuration limits are explained in this article Recommended PHP configuration limits.
  2. Connect to the server and manually do it yourself: How to increase memory allocated to PHP(if your server allows that).
